L EONARD M ALTIN is a respected film critic, historian, and diehard old-movie fan. His first article about classic movies was published in The 8mm Collector when he was thirteen years old. At the same time he launched a column in Film Fan Monthly, and two years later took over as its editor and publisher. He was hired to edit the first edition of his annual movie guide when he was seventeen. Since then he has written hundreds of articles; interviewed countless Hollywood figures from the golden age to the present day (from Lillian Gish to George Clooney); authored numerous books on subjects ranging from comedy teams to the art of the cinematographer; introduced the work of Harold Lloyd, John Wayne, and Walt Disney on DVD; appeared on innumerable television shows; and provided expertise for a number of documentaries about the movies.

As far back as 1973 he received the Cinephile Award from the Society for Cinephiles. Since then he has been recognized by Anthology Film Archives, the American Society of Cinematographers, and the Telluride Film Festival, which awarded him its Silver Medallion in 2007.

Although he reviews contemporary films on a regular basis, and hasnt lost his enthusiasm for cinema, he firmly believes that old movies are better than ever.

L EONARDM ALTIN is a respected film critic and historian, best known for his paperback reference Leonard Maltins Movie Guide, which was first published in 1969. He reached an even wider audience during his thirty-year run on televisions Entertainment Tonight, and has appeared regularly on ReelzChannel since its inception in 2006. He appears on Turner Classic Movies and cohosts the weekly podcast Maltin on Movies with Baron Vaughn. He teaches at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles and was a member of the faculty of the New School for Social Research in New York City. His other books include Leonard Maltins 151 Best Movies Youve Never Seen, Leonard Maltins Movie Crazy, The Great Movie Comedians, The Disney Films, Of Mice and Magic: A History of American Animated Cartoons, The Art of the Cinematographer, Leonard Maltins Movie Encyclopedia, and (as coauthor) The Little Rascals: The Life and Times of Our Gang. His articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The London Times, Premiere, Smithsonian, TV Guide, Esquire, and the Village Voice. He is also a contributor to Oxford Universitys Dictionary of American Biography. For six years he was film critic for Playboy magazine. He has been a Guest Curator at the Museum of Modern Art and served two terms as President of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. In 1997 he was named to the National Film Preservation Board and in 2006 was selected by the Librarian of Congress to sit on the Board of Directors of the National Film Preservation Foundation. For nine years he hosted and coproduced the popular Walt Disney Treasures DVD series. He has appeared in many documentaries and has produced, written, and hosted such cable TV and home-video programs as Young Duke: The Making of a Movie Star (which debuted on A&Es Biography), Cliffhangers: Adventures from the Thrill Factory, The Making of The Quiet Man, The Making of High Noon, The Lost Stooges, and Cartoons for Big Kids. He serves as one of the hosts of the annual TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood and has been the recipient of awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, American Society of Cinematographers, Telluride Film Festival, George Eastman House, Anthology Film Archives, and San Diegos Comic-Con International. Perhaps the pinnacle of his career was his appearance in a now-classic episode of South Park. (Or was it Carmela consulting his Movie Guide on an episode of The Sopranos?) He offers film commentary on WAMC (Northeast) Public Radio, and his work appears on the WAMC Web site.
