John Wanamaker played a major role in the development of American retailing and consumerism. Opening a small mens store in Philadelphia in 1861, by the turn of the century he had major department stores in his home town as well as New York, and was one of the countrys largest merchants.Wanamakers world-view had as much of an impact on American culture as his business enterprises. In the early twentieth century the downtown department store was an important attraction for a city, similar in function to a symphony orchestra or major league sports team of today. Wanamakers department store in Philadelphia acted as an anchor for the city center. Like a magnet, the store held the urban population together by providing entertainment and a setting for civic ceremonies and pageants.Wanamakers influence extended beyond the stores themselves. He provided employment for 8,000 people in Philadelphia and 7,000 in New York, offering jobs to blacks and women when they were still excluded from many businesses. He supported a 3,000 member church which ran a school, savings bank, library and employment service.John Wanamaker was a sharp businessman, and some of his methods have been criticized, but the state of Americas inner cities of his era compared to today speaks for itself. Professor Herbert Ershkowitz of Temple University has drawn upon local archives to chronicle a unique chapter in the history of American culture.

Any completed manuscript has had the input of many persons and it is usually impossible to thank everyone who has helped. I wish to thank Rod Olson and Margaret Marsh of the Department of History at Temple University, Charlene Miers of Villanova University, Alan Kraut of American University, and Jon Wakelyn of Kent State University who read the work. I benefited from their suggestions. Linda Stanley and the staff at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania spent many hours helping me with my research for which I am greatly in their debt. I would like to express my appreciation to William Zulker, who knows more about John Wanamaker than anyone in the world, for sharing his knowledge with me and for aiding me in my work. Grateful acknowledgment is also made to the Temple University Faculty Committee on Research and Study Leave, which granted me a study leave to make this book possible. I would also like to thank my wife Sheila Cosminsky, and my daughter Anna and son Jeff, to whom this book is dedicated.
Permission has been granted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania for pictures used in this book. I thank Pam Webster of HSP for the work she did in preparing these illustrations for publication.

Preface to the Series
Biography is the soul of historythe stories of individual lives that give meaning and life to the past, and allow the reader to share vicariously in the drama of other times and places. It is the classic form of historical narrative, for it is through the lives of individual men and women that we can best come to comprehend the complexities of other ages. At the same time, good biography does not reduce the past to "Great Men"and occasionally women. Rather, it appreciates the limits we all face in defining our lives, whether imposed by social forces beyond our control, the framework in which we interpret reality and opportunity, or our own limited experience and knowledge. Biography reflects the human condition: our actions, our decisions, our thinking have consequences. Biography also reflects and illuminates the world in which its subjects lived, an expression of another time and place.
