Introduction
Born on April 20, 1889, in the small town of Braunau in Austria, Adolf Hitler went on to become one of the most powerful and infamous dictators in world history. After taking part in World War I as a regular soldier, he rose to political fame in the National Socialist German Workers Party, being elected Chancellor of Germany in 1933. Once in power, he made preparations for another major war in Europe, wanting gain Lebensraum (living space) for the German Reich. Under his ideology, the Aryan people, as the master race, were destined to enslave all other races around the world.
His ordered killings in the holocaust along with the attack on Poland in 1939 ultimately led to more than 50 million deaths in World War II. By 1941 Nazi Germany occupied most of Europe along with North Africa. It was only in 1941, following the invasion of Russia, that the tide of the war turned against Hitler and his troo ps. When it became obvious that his plan of making Germany a world power had failed, he killed himself on April 30th, 1945. As the victorious Allied forces divided the country among themselves, no one doubted that Hitler had placed his stamp on the twentieth century.

Part I: The Early Years
1) April 20, 1889 Birth And Early Childhood
Adolf Hitler was born on April 20th 1889 in the small town of Braunau-am-Inn, Austria close to the Austro-German border, where his farther, Alois, worked as a customs officer. Even though his parents had two other children before him, both of them died in their infancy. Growing up in Austria, Adolf attended several schools around the town of Linz as his family moved around the area. For a short while the family also lived in Passau, Germany, where he acquired the characteristic lower Bavarian dialect, rather than an Austrian dialect, which marked his speech throughout his life. In 1896, after having moved back to Austria, Adolf 's mother Klara gave birth to Paula, his younger sister who would later outlive him.
Hitlers Parents
After his father died in 1903, Adolfs began receiving bad grades at school and together with his mother he decided to enroll at a secondary school in Steyr, where his performance and behavior improved. However only two years later, after failing the final exam, Hitler left his school without any plans for further education or his future career.
2) October 1907 Rejection From The Academy Of Fine Arts In Vienna
After leaving school in 1905 at age sixteen, Hitler spent the next few years with little to no ambitions of getting a job. His mother urged him to learn a trade, though Hitler despised the idea of daily work and its necessary submission to authority. With his father and only true authority figure dead, Hitler began travelling around the city of Linz, developing a taste in the fine arts. He started attending the opera, visiting museums and dreamed of becoming a great artist himself.
Painting by Adolf Hitler (1914)
Financed by support from his mother and orphan's benefits he moved to Vienna, where he sold his own painting of Vienna's sights to tourists. Wanting to pursuers his interest, he applied for the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna twice in 1907 and again in 1908, but got rejected both times due to unfitness for painting. The school recommended him to study architecture, though his lack of academic credentials hindered Hitler from signing up for any university courses. When his mother died of breast cancer in late 1907, Hitler ran out of money and had to live in various men's hostels and homeless shelters.
3) 1914 Volunteering For World War 1
World War 1 marked a turning point in Hitlers life. After years without money or a stable career, he finally had a sense of purpose and belonging. Hitler enlisted in a Bavarian Regiment at age 25, thus volunteering for the German-instead of the Austrian Army. Although many of his fellow soldiers lost their lives against the British and Belgians near Ypres, he managed to survive the battles without major injuries. His luck continued until 1916 when he was hit in by a shell fragment during the Battle of the Somme. He was sent back to Germany, where he was hospitalized in Berlin, his first time away from the Front after two years of war.
Hitler (on the left) and other German Soldiers
Within his regiment, Hitler was known as an unusual soldier, always ready to volunteer for dangerous assignments and eager for action. Unlike his fellow soldiers, he rarely complained about the horrible conditions in the trenches and preferred to discuss history and art rather than women or liquor. His fellow soldiers generally liked Hitler, though many regarded him as too eager to please his superiors.
4) September 12, 1919 Hitler Joins German Workers Party
After losing World War I, Hitler returned to Munich. His lack of formal education forced him to stay in the army, where he was appointed to intelligence agent in July 1919. His job included infiltrating the newly founded German Workers' Party (DAP), which many regarded as extremist and potentially dangerous. On September 12th, 1919 he went to a meeting of the Party dressed in civilian clothes, were he met around twenty-five other people. After listening to a speech on the possible separation of Bavaria from Germany, he spontaneously gave a speech against such plans and surprised everyone in the room with his talent for public speaking and passionate rhetoric.
