Bibliography

C ompiling the statistics and stories for this book was both a great deal of fun and a great deal of work. Mixed Martial Arts is a sport like no other, and years down the road the people below, the small band of those who fight and those who write about the fights will be considered pioneers. And without their dedicated efforts, this book would not have happened.

I pulled from numerous sources to put together the numbers and below Im listing them according to category.

Tara LaRosa, on why she got involved with MMA

Chapter Ten

Heroes?

T ara LaRosa courageously fought on November 24, 2007, at Bodog FIGHTS HOOKnSHOOT. It was her 16th time to enter into professional combat and her 15th time to leave victorious.

It takes courage to fight and any time two individuals have the gumption to test themselves so nakedly and in such a public arena, the masses have to give them their due credit. But after this particular bout some people even considered Tara a hero?

The actual act of fighting another individual, of artful striking, skilled grappling, of a conditioned body working near its peak certainly can be seen as heroic, but falls short of true heroism.

It takes more than simply fighting, impressing others with phenomenal skill, to earn the moniker of hero.

A few things make people heroes:

Fighting on despite the odds and inspiring others to do the same
Giving thoughtlessly without consideration of reward
Genuinely caring about others
Living by a set of principles that others aspire to live by as well

Those in the limelight have the opportunity to reach more people with their heroism. And the following fighters might shun the notion that they are heroes, but their actions give them away!

Houston Alexander gave one of his kidneys to his ten- year- old daughter while taking on each day as a single parent of six, and teaching and inspiring kids in the Omaha area.

Randy Couture wholeheartedly works to help injured service members and their families through his Xtreme Couture GI Foundation.

Genki Sudo recognized the ring was his small stage to offer a cry for worldwide cooperation and understanding with his banner, We are all one .

Frank Mir lost almost everything due to a motorcycle accident, but painstakingly battled back to fight once again.
