Acknowledgments
Without the cooperation of many people and the special help of a few, this book could not have been written. I am grateful to all of the seekers of justice, their families, and their colleagues who took the time to share with me knowledge, insights, and in some cases, photographs. Their names appear throughout the book, and I thank them collectively here.
Because three of the justice seekers were no longer living when I wrote about them, I am especially indebted to their family members who provided me with background: Lena Gray, mother of James Gray; Brenda Kaplowitz, widow of Seymour Kaplowitz; and Lani Yampol Gershon, granddaughter of Rabbi S. Burr Yampol.
Dr. Ezekiel Barber of Union, N.J., Norman Brickman of Albany, N.Y., and Carl and Helen Seidel of Skokie, Ill. graciously funded the expenses incurred, with donations to either the State University of New York Research Foundation or the Greater Albany Jewish Federation.
Some of the interviews in this book were originally conducted for articles I wrote (bylined Rochelle Saidel-Wolk) beginning in 1978 for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. Murray Zuckoff, editor of JTA, has always encouraged my writing on this subject.
Dr. Robert Mandel, former editor of State University of New York Press, provided the opportunity for me to begin this book, and other editors at SUNY Press guided me during the final stages. The American Jewish Committee library was an important resource.
