Foreword
This guide is designed to help you to read and to understand The Republic. One of the difficulties people sometimes encounter when they first read Plato's works is the dialogue form of his books. Of course this dialogue form makes them so much more entertaining to read; but at the same time, the very ''chattiness" and drama of a living conversation often make it difficult to follow the ideas Plato is very carefully and often very subtly putting forward.
This guide is an attempt to present the main ideas and arguments of The Republic in a rather simplified form. The best way to use the guide is to read it together with The Republic; it is not, and could not be, a substitute for the book.
