Preface and Acknowledgments
In recent years, political terrorism has emerged as a conspicuously disturbing problem. Yet, despite our increasingly sophisticated grasp of this issue, practical insight into the individual psychological dimensions of political terrorism remains embryonic at best. Although the social psychology of political terrorism already has been rather handsomely explained, the individual psychology of the political terrorist has not yet proved to be a particularly fertile area of understanding.
The purpose of this book is to explore the mind of the political terrorist. Specifically, it attempts to identify, analyze, explain, and illustrate the critical interrelationship between the underlying psychoanalytical bases and inherent psychodynamic "rewards" of political terrorism. My fundamental conclusions are that the individual who becomes and remains a political terrorist generally appears to be psychologically molded by certain narcissistic personality disturbances. These disturbances appear to predispose strongly such individuals toward the intrinsic psychodynamic rewards of political terrorism.
