Bourdieu: A Critical Introduction: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Bourdieu: A Critical Introduction" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Throughout his career, French philosopher Pierre Bourdieu sought to interrogate what he described as the social unconscious, the means by which power is held and transmitted across generations. Bourdieus work has been hugely influential in disciplines across the social sciences and humanities for decades, yet Schirato and Roberts argue that few scholars are using his work to its full potential.Bourdieus work is so wide-ranging that commentary tends to focus on specific theoretical concepts he developed or his books on particular fields of inquiry. However he continued to develop these concepts in his work across his whole career, and much of the richness of his thinking is lost if this isnt taken into account.Drawing on recently released lectures, Schirato and Roberts offer a systematic account of Bourdieus full body of work, from his early research in Algiers to his last lectures in Paris. They show how Bourdieu continued to develop his concepts of habitus, field, capital, power and socio-cultural reproduction well into his later years. They also offer a nuanced reading of Bourdieus thinking about education, class, language, knowledge and culture beyond the individual books Bourdieu published on these topics. This critical introduction to Bourdieu is essential reading for all Bourdieu scholars, and for researchers and thinkers using Bourdieus work in their own social and cultural analysis.

Wed like to acknowledge the value of the feedback and suggestions contributed - photo 1

Wed like to acknowledge the value of the feedback and suggestions contributed by our two readers, Professor John Frow of Sydney University and Associate Professor Tony Moore of Monash University: this is a significantly better work because of their input. John was also instrumental in determining how we approached the task of writing a book on Bourdieu, and has been a very generous mentor and influence for over 25 years.

The following people were helpful and supportive in one way or another: Barbara Chin, Madeleine Collinge, Rachel Gamby, Jenny Lou, Beverley and Susan Price, Kirsten Reid, Belinda and Harry Ricketts, Hugh Roberts and Jan Stewart.

The University of Macau provided Tony Schirato with sabbatical leave during the first half of 2017. The staff of the National Library of Ireland were, on a daily basis, friendly and helpful.

We would like to extend our thanks to Rebecca Allen, the in-house editor at Allen & Unwin, and Susan Jarvis, the freelance copyeditor. Finally, Elizabeth Weiss has beenand remainsa wonderful publisher and a good friend.
