Preface
A very special thanks to my wife (Andrea) and 6-year-old son (Paxton) for working with me while I undertook this book which focuses upon sustainable communities in a very real yet innovative manner that describes how such communities can be created now and updated constantly in the future is a lesson for everyone. The world changes and with it what we need to take action now and in the future. My family understands this need for change and was the inspiration for my spending over 2 years preparing the book: it is dedicated to them and our global family future.
Every time that I speak, give lectures and keynote talks, I end with a picture of myself holding Paxton when he was 3 years old. My point is that the reason I am there speaking, and doing this book, is that his life is at stake. Either we parents and grandparents need to do something about climate change today or we will destroy our childrens future health, environment, and their climate. We cannot wait.
There is no time to delay or tell our family and children. We have to lower emissions and pollution now. The clock is ticking so we can not wait to waste, dream, or even imagine that the issues of climate change will disappear. We must act now. As my son puts it, Daddy, be sure to turn off the light when you leave. And he recycles bottles at his school and we go to recycle locations nearby our home to recycle. I tell him that we need to do this for the Earth and he gets some money for his college education.
Hence the book is organized into regions around the world and specific areas of expertise needed to create sustainable communities. The book starts with an overview of the chapters and then an introduction to the regions and areas of specific needs for every sustainable community using examples that have worked and are being implemented now.
