Few brigades of the Civil War can boast of a record as distinguished as that of New Yorks 69th, yet it has never fully received the attention warranted by its record of military excellence, distinctive reputation, and the unusual perspective its members brought to the Civil War. In fact, the 69th was engaged in nearly every major action of the eastern theater; its military reputation was well deserved and its combat casualties, which are some of the highest of the war, are testimony to the soldiers collective bravery and patriotism. In his post as war correspondent for the New York Herald, Capt. David Power Conygham was required to be an eyewitness to the many battles on which he reported - some of the experiences he would later describe when writing the history of the Irish Brigade. Conyghams account of the Irish Brigade is one of the best - filled with vivid accounts of battle, wit and humor, and an appendix of scrupulously gathered biographical data on the men who served the unit.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
This new edition of David Power Conyngham's Irish Brigade and Its Campaigns is part of a much larger project on the Irish in the Civil War that I have been engaged in for a number of years. During that time I have received the help of numerous people, and I hope one day to acknowledge fully the depth of my gratitude for their assistance. Here, however, I want to give a special thanks to those whose efforts have directly contributed to this volume. Most important was the help of Michael Fitzgerald of Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland, who shared with me the fruits of his own research on the life of Conyngham. James Jordan of Dublin, in a voluminous correspondence, gave me a great many valuable insights into the Irish contributions in the Civil War. Peter Lysy and Charles Lamb helped me locate important materials in the University of Notre Dame Archives. Kenneth Powers of Westport, Connecticut, and Collin MacDonald of Leesburg, Virginia, gave me their usual great support and provided key illustrations. Danny Lorello of the New York State Archives went above and beyond the call of duty by supplying information at a moment's notice. My colleague Rich Megraw gave the introduction a thorough reading, making my prose more felicitous than it would otherwise be. Finally, my wife Maureen worked many long hours on the index when she was already exhausted from the million and one things she normally does to keep our family functioning. To all of these generous people, I am very grateful.
Research for this volume benefited from financial support furnished by the Research Grants Committee of the University of Alabama, the New York State Archives Research Residency Program, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
