Preface
To serve or not to serve on a jury?
This question is a relatively recent one for Mennonites and members of such historic peace churches as Church of the Brethren and Brethren in Christ. (Although committed to peace, the Quakers, or Society of Friends, have been less troubled by jury duty or participation in government.)
This book was originally commissioned by Mennonite Central Committee because Mennonites needed to examine the issues. It is written from an Anabaptist/Mennonite perspective.
However, the book hopefully will serve all who value the heritage of the sixteenth-century Anabaptists. It can benefit any Christian who wants to examine how faithfulness to God and jury service fit together. It is intended to be relevant in both Canada and the United States.
Before the 1960s, Mennonites were seldom called for jury service, and some conference resolutions and confessions specifically rejected jury service for Mennonites. Then as Mennonites moved off the farm and began to participate in city life, their names wound up

on jury lists more frequently.
Mennonites have historically avoided participation in government in general and the court system in particular. Thus jury service has raised serious questions for the many now called.
Can people who practice nonresistant love toward enemies participate in a system which relies on the threat of violence to enforce its judgments? Can people who would forgive one who robbed them be party to imprisoning a person who robbed someone else?
These questions trouble many today. With the number of jury trials steadily increasing, calls for jurors become more frequent. Does jury service violate biblical teaching? Is it proper for a follower of Jesus Christ to serve on a jury? How can we examine the issues and decide what to do?
This book is not an attempt to give the "right" answers to these complex question. Rather, its purpose is to present the options in order to help believers decide for themselves, through the power of the Holy Spirit, what faithfulness to God requires of them.
