ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
There are two people without whose help this book would not have been written at all. Len Doyal kept faith with the project throughout. He gave me confidence to do it in the first place, bullied me into continuing and helped me to finish it, while often doing more than his fair share of domestic labour. Imogen Pennell was initially employed on the project as a research worker at the Polytechnic of North London, but her contribution both to the research and the writing of the book far exceeded what could possibly have been expected. She made a major contribution to the final outcome both in intellectual terms and as a friend.
