Preface
In the fall of 1983, while working as a volunteer at the Northampton Historical Society, I chanced upon a set of four journals containing a series of letters.* Written between 1861 and 1864, the letters recorded the Civil War experiences of Charles Harvey Brewster, a native of Northampton who had served with the Tenth Massachusetts Regiment. Yet, curiously, they were not written in Brewster's own hand. They had been copied into the journals many years after the war by one of Brewster's daughters, Mary Kate Brewster.
Interesting as the letters were, I doubt that I would have paid them much notice had I not also discovered, tucked between the pages of one volume, the original version of one of the transcriptions. A quick comparison of the two documents revealed that Miss Brewster had been a zealous editor, freely deleting or substantially altering entire passages. The changes seemed to reflect the good intentions of a daughter eager to portray her father in a favorable light, but I could not help wondering how much had been lost as a result of her editorial efforts.
Fortunately, the letter kept with the journals was not the only original to survive. More than two hundred others were in the possession of Brewster's grandson, Jonathan Allured. When I made contact with Allured at his home in Hickory, North Carolina, he invited me to visit and examine the letters firsthand. The treasure trove of Civil War memorabilia I found in his basement exceeded all expectation. In addition to his grandfather's correspondence, Jonathan Allured held more than a hundred Civil War letters from other members of the family, swords, spurs, commissions, photographs, a daily journal, and other assorted documents from the front. The two of us spent a weekend poring over the various artifacts, after which Allured graciously offered to loan the entire letter collection to the Northampton Historical Society.
