PREFACE
This book grew out of a Boston College graduate seminar on civil society and progressive politics led by Charles Derber. The contributors to this volume worked collectively to help frame the book's argument, meeting over almost two years to discuss our ideas, data, and writing. Each contributor researched and wrote her or his own chapter, although drafts were discussed and edited by other contributors, with Derber taking the lead. Derber wrote the introduction and the five chapters in part 2, while the other contributors each wrote one chapter in part 1. This volume thus reflects the spirit of community that we advocate for the Left and the nation.
We owe a special debt to S. M. Miller and Patricia Bergin, both of whom participated regularly in the discussions in which this book took shape. Miller's lifelong concern with questions of political vision and strategy informed all of our thinking, and his insights are sprinkled generously throughout the volume. Bergin contributed extensively to our discussions, helping us develop our thinking about civil society, particularly in the context of political developments in Eastern Europe. She also provided systematic, detailed, and valuable feedback on much of the manuscript, especially part 1.
We also want to thank Richard Flacks, Stanley Aronowitz, and Alan Wolfe for reading and offering comments and suggestions on the manuscript. In addition, we thank Dan Feeney for his contributions to our early discussions, and Bill Gamson, David Karp, Eve Spangler, John Williamson, and Diane Vaughn for their encouragement. A special thanks to Elena Kolesnikova for reading and commenting on the manuscript and patiently sustaining the principal author.

Finally, this project reflects our goal to be activist-scholars, which is to say that we hope academics will use their talents and skills toward the betterment of society. In this spirit, we are assigning the royalties of this book to Resist, an organization that helps fund grassroots community groups fighting for justice throughout the United States.
