Preface
Scholars of BrazilUnited States relations have provided a good understanding of the ebb and flow of political relations between the two Western Hemisphere giants. Less understood is the special relationship that existed between the military establishments of Brazil and the United States. With the exception of Frank McCann's seminal work The Brazilian-American Alliance, few works investigate in any detail the role military diplomacy played in the creation of close ties. Whereas McCann's study examined the World War II period, this book focuses on Brazil-U.S. military relations in the post-war era, particularly emphasizing the roles of the Joint BrazilUnited States Defense Commission and the Joint BrazilUnited States Military Commission.
Chapter 1 offers a synopsis of the birth of the special military relationship. The following chapters detail military ties in the context of the cold war. In those chapters I analyze Brazilian and American motivations for maintaining a close relationship, the evolution of military relations, and the demise of the formal alliance that held the Brazil and the United States militaries together from 1942 until 1977.
