Introduction A Unique Journey: 18471896
Utah's path to statehood is unique in the annals of the American experience. No other western territory was carved from the wilderness on the strength of religious conviction. No other territory was initially settled by such a like-minded, homogenous wave of pioneers. No other territory faced the torrent of criticism, conflict, and confrontation that dominated Utah's pre-statehood experience. While other territories waged longer campaigns to enter the Union, none experienced a more pitched battle than Utah's struggle for statehood.
It was a story played out against remarkable times in the nation's history. The Utah Territory came into being when the West was still young, unmapped, and untamed. By the time statehood was achieved, the frontier had been all but formally declared closed, and major cities were emerging throughout the West. At the dawn of the Utah story native tribes lived in delicate balance with the land; by the time the forty-fifth star was sewn onto the flag, almost all of the nation's native people had been driven to reservations after major battles and great loss of lifeboth of which also scarred the history of Utah Territory.
