John Ravage has assembled a phenomenal archive of nearly 200 never-before-seen photographs that depict the full range of African-American experience in the West. Beginning with the earliest available photographs from the mid-1800s, the collection of images in Black Pioneers reconstructs our understanding of the history and contributions of African-Americans to our westward expansion. Black Pioneers shows that blacks did not play a limited role in the settlement of the West; instead, their work and experiences as soldiers, doctors, ranchers, deputies, nannies, midwives, politicians, cowboys, and homesteaders were crucial to the communities in which they lived.

Foreword
As we embark upon the twenty-first century, W. E. B. DuBois's prophetic analysis of the color line seems ever more apparent and practical. He was addressing the dilemma of African diasporic people being dismissed, aborted, and placed on the margins of world history and, more importantly, Americana history. Equally important, regional and community studies are the ontological base in which one can begin to examine the historical and cultural experiences of blacks throughout the diaspora. Moreover, DuBois, like Carter. G. Woodson and Charles H. Wesley, to name a few, were African American historians, who consistently pointed to issues and schema of historiography, with emphasis on interpretative analysis, method, and theoretical application. Hence, their research was thorough, accurate, and preserved a legacy for an intellectual tradition of academic rigor and critical analysis. In contemporary times, scholars who study the African diasporic historical and cultural experiences, are challenged with the task to transform consciousness, transcend scholarly rigor, while simultaneously seeking to provide an alternative epistemological framework to query, describe, and evaluate Africana phenomena.
