While anthropologists report that each episode of fieldwork is a unique one, all probably experience some similar emotions in the process of ethnographic research. My initial residence in rural Belize began with a sense of profound personal isolation but culminated thirteen months later in a reluctant departure from a place and people I had grown to love. Since that first visit, each time I leave the easy-going sociability of the village I encounter a different sort of isolationan uneasy intimacy with data that seem a pallid reflection of the people left behind. Apart from the theoretical intent of the work, I hope above all that the following ethnography recreates something of the character and lives of rural Belizeans.
Despite the isolation occasionally encountered in ethnographic research, fieldwork and writing are never undertaken alone, of course. Long before departing for the field, my ideas were influenced by many teachers and colleagues through the twin processes of emulation and critique. One of the first of these scholars was Mike Chibnik, who provided me with a detailed baseline ethnography and a role model of anthropologist as teacher. Faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles, later guided me in the development of my theoretical, research, and methodological interests. Of my teachers at UCLA, I would most like to thank Tim Earle, Nazif Shahrani, Susanna Hecht, John Friedmann, and, above all, Allen Johnson, who supervised my Ph.D. research. I believe all these individuals will recognize something of themselves in the work that follows. While gratefully acknowledging their ideas, I am solely responsible for the way in which they were modified and put to use.
