Acknowledgments
The principal acknowledgment in a collective work of original chapters is to the authors themselves and to their various sources of support and assistance. These are indicated, wherever appropriate, as acknowledgments in the individual chapters. Thank you.
The whole of the book is different from the sum of its parts, and its existence as an entity should be appropriately acknowledged as well. It is an ill-kept secret that many more people than the authors participate in the creation of any book. A debt of gratitude is extended to Sagamore Publishing. The final shepherding of the book into print was overseen by Brian Moore, Production Supervisor for the project, and Amy Todd, Design Assistant, who designed the cover. Thanks to both of you.
And finally, to Steven and Courtney, Jordan, and Emily who offer the insight and thirst for play and leisure.

Preface
Picture 2
All purely material research conducted by a human scientist is purely inquisitive behaviorappetitive behavior in free operation. In this sense, it is play behavior. All scientific knowledge ... arose from playful activities conducted in a free field entirely for their own sake... Anybody who has seen in his own activities the smooth transition from inquisitive childhood play to the life-work of a scientist could never doubt the fundamental identity of play and research.
Konrad Lorenz
Psychology and Phylogeny
1976
Within the past 25 years we have witnessed a dramatic increase in empirical research on leisure, both in terms of research articles published in professional journals, and in research-based books on leisure such as the present volume. A major thrust of this research has focused on the role of leisure in the person's lifein what ways does leisure influence development, or consolidate or reinforce it, or simply reflect the individual's developmental history? In a complementary vein, there has been interest in another important way of examining leisure. That is, how do leisure behaviors themselves develop? What are the antecedent conditions and behavioral correlates of various forms of leisure at different developmental levels and for different populations? What is the conceptual relationship between leisure and other epistemic-ludic behaviors, such as reality testing, exploration, insightful problem-solving, learning, humor, metaphor comprehension, ritualistic behavior, or language itself?
