PREFACE
Since 1974, it seems safe to guess, well over a million people have read Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. However, it seems equally likely that only a small fraction of those readerspeople like myself who reached our intellectual maturity in the heady days of the anti-Vietnam War cum antitechnology movement of the late 1960s and early 1970sreally appreciate the intellectual ferment out of which that remarkable book emerged.
Like others, I was impressed by the fulminations of Jacques Ellul and Herbert Marcuse against our technocratic and bureaucratic culture. Perhaps unlike others, I have taken a very long timetwenty yearsto get my feelings about our technological society straightened out and to get my reactions down on paper. This book is one philosopher's personal reaction to the Great Technology Debate. I claim no great originality for the effort; it is simply my attempt to come to grips with what I see as the exaggerated claims of Ellul and Marcuseand Martin Heidegger or literary antitechnologists such as Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. It is my attempt to get at "the truth" (my truth, with a small "t") about technology and our technological culture. I hope, however, that the book is definitive in one sense: I want it to be my last word, my last contribution to the technology debate of the 1970s. I have no hope that the book will be definitive in any other sensethough I would be naive if I did not admit that I hope others share my modest perspective.
