Acknowledgments
As with all historical studies, this was a collective effort that could not have been completed without the assistance of numerous individuals and institutions. Acknowledgment of these debts must begin with the archivists and librarians who eased the burdens of research. I am especially grateful to Harold Miller of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin; Jessica Randolph of the Museum of American Textile History; Eartha Dengler and Ken Skulski of the Immigrant City Archives; and Uta Bargmann, Michael Wileski, and Linda Seidman of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While he was at the latter institution, Ken Fones-Wolf not only acquired several relevant manuscript collections, but helped me to clarify some early thoughts on the project.
Although this project was an independent effort, support from the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union made my task considerably easier than it otherwise would have been. The organization's Rieve-Pollock Foundation provided financial aid for a research trip to Wisconsin; President Jack Sheinkman gave me permission to read TWUA records that have not yet been opened to the general public; and Research Director Keir Jorgensen not only offered timely encouragement but furnished a variety of documents that proved extremely helpful. He also arranged to have two former TWUA officials, President Sol Stetin and Research Director George Perkel, read the manuscript. I am very appreciative of their comments.
I owe an especially large debt to another former TWUA research director. At a time when I was still uncertain whether I would see the study through to its conclusion, Solomon Barkin forced me to sort out my intentions. After I had stopped procrastinating and returned to work, his detailed remarks on several versions of the manuscript rescued me from various errors of fact and interpretation. He also put me in touch with Donald Stabile, who generously allowed me to read his then unpublished study of Barkin's economic thought.

My interest in deindustrialization began more than a decade ago while attending a three-day symposium on the subject organized by Bruce Laurie of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Since that time, Bruce has aided my development as a historian in ways too numerous to recount. At several critical junctures in the preparation of the present work, I encountered conceptual problems that threatened serious delays. On each occasion, Bruce's comments provided the perspective needed to resolve the dilemma.
