INTRODUCTION
In his 1937 survey of American life, Inside USA, writer John Gunther called Connecticut ''the worthy little state." Connecticut is littleat just over 5,000 square miles, it ranks third smallest among the fifty states. Only Rhode Island and Delaware are smaller.
But those 5,000 square miles are packed with history. Connecticut's founding in the 1630swhen Puritan settlers left neighboring Massachusetts to make new lives along the Connecticut Riverwas the first westward movement in the land that would become the United States. The Connecticut Colony took an early lead in the movement for independence from Britain, and the state played an important part in the Revolutionary War and in the founding of the United States of America.
In the 1800s, Connecticut inventors like Eli Whitney, Samuel Colt, and Seth Thomas put the state in the forefront of the American industrial revolution. By the 20th century, Connecticut was a powerful industrial state whose mills and factories attracted immigrants from all over the world.
Present-day Connecticut is a state of contrasts. Within its borders are affluent suburbs like Greenwich and troubled cities like Bridgeport. In its towns, perfectly preserved colonial houses often stand across the street from high-tech office parks. With 3 million residents, Connecticut is among the most crowded statesand yet airline pilots say that northeast Connecticut, the state's "quiet corner," is one of the last places on the East Coast where few lights are visible from the air at night.
Not many states can match the diversity of Connecticut in people and landscape, and hardly any other states have had more of an impact on the rest of the nation. For such a small state, then, Connecticut has a remarkably big history.
