Acknowledgments
Over ten years ago, when I was struggling with my first book, Arlene Kaplan Daniels asked me where I ever get the idea that authors had to do their books alone. I took her implicit advice to heart, so there are many people to thank for help with Money for Change.
Some of those people are largely unknown to me. They were members of review committees and panels who decided my project was worthy of financial support. That support make it possible for me to travel locally around New England to conduct interviews and attend Haymarket People's Fund meetings, to attend and give papers at several national conferences, andmost importantto take time off from my regular obligations to concentrate on writing. I thank the people who provided grants from the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy/Lilly Endowment, the Aspen Institute Nonprofit Sector Research Fund, and the Tufts Faculty Research Award Committee.
Michael Ames at Temple University Press has followed this project with interest almost since its beginning. He helped keep me going, and made real the possibility of this book. My Sociology Writing Group read every chapter at least once, and some twice. Their questions and criticisms, and espe-

cially dally their ideas for revision and change, run throughout the work. It is hard to imagine how I could have done it without them: Paula Aymer, Carol Brown, Karen Hansen, JoAnne Preston, and Andrea Walsh.
Along the way a number of colleaguesboth academics and practitionersraised sharp questions or made astute comments that shaped my project in crucial ways. At the risk of leaving someone out, I want to thank J. Craig Jenkins, David Meyer, John Stanfield II, Teresa Odendahl, Joan Roelofs, Mary Anna Culleton Colwell, Jean Entine, Robert Hollister, Tracy Gary, Diana Vaughan, Bill Domhoff, Mary Ellen Capek, Robert Bothwell, Shula Reinharz, James Ennis, Rosalind Shaw, and Paul Joseph. Ira Silver read every word of an almost-final draft, told me where I was off track, and helped with the list of references.
