This edited book is based on the special issue of the International Journal of Community and Social Development , volume 2, issue 2, 2020. It focusses on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and its implications on community and social development. SAGE has published the special issue online in perpetuity for the benefit of public, which dovetails well with my own Charles Sturt University motto. All articles in the issue can be freely downloaded from https://journals.sagepub.com/toc/coda/2/2.
For the purpose of the edited book, the content of the issue is slightly adapted in terms of changing articles to chapters and the style and format. This edited book is produced on print-on-demand basis, which suggests that still there is a demand for hard copies and it certainly helps those who do not have access to internet.
I would like to immensely thank all authors and reviewers for their contribution to this edited book. I also thank the wonderful SAGE team for producing this book in a timely manner. Finally, I would like to thank my wife Jaya and our children Neel and Tulasi for their understanding and support towards my academic work.
Although several colleagues have contributed to this book, for any errors, I am responsible.

The Global Impact of and Responses to the COVID-19 Pandemic: Introduction
Manohar Pawar
By introducing the objectives of the edited book, this chapter reflectively discusses some of the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic that raises many critical questions relating to several other socioeconomic and environmental problems we have been facing in our daily lives. The role of governments or the lack of it in some cases, the impact on people's lives and economy, health infrastructure, have caused serious concerns. Like the deadly corona virus, greed, linear growth, racism and discrimination have been deeply hurting humanity for centuries. To fight these and similar maladies the chapter argues for a global citizenship approach. At the end, it also introduces the other chapters of the book.
Like many others, I have been indirectly impacted by the spread of the coronavirus and thinking about researching and writing, and in some ways contributing to alleviating the misery. My thoughts and reflections were further triggered by a call from Professor Manish K. Jha from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, India, suggesting me to consider a special issue on the coronavirus pandemic. The synergy of Professor Jha's call and my own thoughts resulted in me articulating the following objectives for this edited book, and these were communicated to the authors with a broad flexible structure for their chapters.
The main objectives of this edited book is to document and analyse:
  • the impact of novel coronavirus pandemic on sociocultural, health, including mental health, economic, employment and work, education aspects of people's lives in each country context;
  • governments' policies and programmes to respond to the pandemic and deal/cope with the impact;
  • issues/problems/challenges/limitations/contradictions experienced in responding to the pandemic and in addressing the impact;
  • major lessons learnt in each country context to effectively manage the pandemic and its impact; and
  • the implications for community social development practice in the post-pandemic context.
Although all the authors have tried to keep these objectives in their mind while writing their chapters (except one), I do not claim that this edited book does full justice to all the objectives. Thus, I do suggest for other scholars to pursue these and similar objectives with more vigour and scholarliness. I hope this edited book will aid towards that end. Further, I would like to echo Professor Mark Henrickson's (2020) caution that it is a risky venture to writing about coronavirus at this stage as the situation is still evolving in many countries and so is its impact. Where and when it will spread or end is uncertain, and it is too early to ascertain its anticipated and actual full impact, though some of us have been experiencing, observing and acting and reacting in our own ways. Thus, some of the ideas presented in these chapters may or may not remain valid and be applicable. However, I do hope they offer some bases for further research and action.
