A leaders provocative look at 20th century financial markets Henry Kaufman, former vice Chairman of Salomon Brothers, was a key Wall Street figure in the 70s and 80s. His projections about interest rates, bond performance, unemployment, and government debt impacted monetary policy in more than one presidential administration, and prompted swings in the markets. Youll find On Money and Markets Dr. Kaufmans look back at the financial and economic arenas he helped shape for half a century both fascinating and valuable. His memoir gives you insight into such questions as why the Federal Reserve has gained so much power, and what it means for investors....and what patterns we can see in the credit crunches and other financial crises that have rocked Wall Street and world markets. The dozen or so questions he explores are of serious concern to todays investors. And few other experts have Dr. Kaufmans perspective and experience to answer them.

Foreword
By Paul A. Volcker
Ordinarily on a long plane trip my priority is sleeping. Not on my last flight to Tokyo. I took along a draft of Henry Kaufman's memoir. It kept me not only awake but fascinated.
I cannot claim scholarly detachment and lack of bias. I have counted Henry as a close friend and trusted professional colleague for forty years. We are close in age. We were both apprenticed in the same institutionthe Federal Reserve Bank of New York, which for many years has educated budding financial economists for a role on Wall Street. Our subsequent careers followed different but parallel tracks. In many respects our thinking has overlapped.
For all of that, I will not be alone in finding On Money and Markets both an important book and a lively read. It provides fresh and striking insights into Wall Street and some of the people and institutions that populate it. It compels attention to its analysis of the implicationsboth highly promising and potentially dangerousof global finance. And it reveals a warm and affecting human story of a man who has found so much in America and has returned so much to his adopted land.
Henry Kaufman, born in a bucolic German village, was one of many children who found their normal life turned upside down by Nazi terror. Without significant resources his family suddenly had to adjust to the very different and difficult environment of life in New York City. Like many of his refugee contemporaries, Henry seldom spoke of those troubled times, at least not to friends who hadn't shared that experiencethose of whom he writes, with a tinge of longing, as having lives flowing, "with a peaceful and predictable rhythm. Born into well situated families (with)... know(n) career paths at an early age."
