Not many can imagine the joy and relief I feel arriving at the stage when I can thank many of those who over the years, the many years, provided support both through wise scholarly advice and enduring friendship. The idea for this project came out of conversations with the much regretted and ever insightful Pierre Savard, but I was further motivated by my exchanges with Alain Roy, Karen Dubinsky, and Serge Jaumain who may not realize that I followed through with many of their suggestions. One of the most telling indications of this projects long maturation period is the fact that I owe much to the outstanding and thorough research conducted in the archives by Matthew Hayday in the long gone days when he was a graduate student.
