My views on the nature-nurture debate have been profoundly shaped and sharpened through a process of friendly (and he might add, "dialectical") struggle with Richard Lewontin. Although our perspectives are sometimes quite different, he has been an unfailingly supportive as well as astute critic of my work. My debt to him is enormous. David Shaner, the series editor, has shown the patience of a saint during the more than four years that it took me to get what might seem a simple job done. Among the many colleagues and friends who, over the years, gave generously of their time and shared their ideas and sometimes unpublished manuscripts, I want especially to thank Garland Allen, John Beatty, Raphael Falk, Jonathan Harwood, Evelyn Fox Keller, Daniel J. Kevles, Philip Kitcher, Robert Proctor, Nils Roll-Hansen, Hamish Spencer, Paul Weindling, and Leila Zenderland. A special debt is owed Michael Ruse, who first urged me to collect these essays in one volume.
A version of chapter 2, "Eugenics and the Left," first appeared in the October/December 1984 issue of
