Bob Giddings
Chair of Architecture and Urban Design in the Department of Architecture and the Built Environment at Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, his research in urban design is based on a post-city structuring approach to cities. A focus for this work has been the design and use of public squares in European city centres, which ranges from geometric configurations, pedestrian activity and microclimate, to the privatisation of public space and alternative informal uses of the public realm. An important factor is the perception of the city centre by different user groups, and the way in which citizens across the demographic divide can be accommodated without conflict.
Rose Gilroy
Professor of Ageing Policy and Planning in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at Newcastle University, Roses research explores the impact of the ageing population, particularly in relation to planning and housing. Rose explores how place supports everyday life in later life. As a planner, she is interested in the transactional relationship between people and their environment that embraces how people individually and collectively may influence their environments. Rose Gilroys research has included research in urban China, rural Japan and India. Locally, she is a member of Newcastle Age Friendly City, working to make Newcastle a better place in which to grow old.
