About the Author
Jackie Carteris a Professor of Statistical Literacy at the University of Manchester. She co-directs the Q-Step Centre at the University of Manchester and leads the programme of paid internships which she established in 2013. In 2020 she was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by Advance HE, the UK professional body that oversees teaching and learning in Higher Education, for her work on making an outstanding impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession in Higher Education. In the same year, Jackie was also conferred as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS). She is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE. She sits on the University of Glasgows Urban Big Data Centres Advisory Committee, the ESRCs Strategic Advisory Network, and has previously held positions on various committees including with the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and SEDA (Staff Educational Development Association).
Jackie is passionate about giving students opportunities to develop their skills in the workplace. She draws on pedagogic research and was inspired by the work of Paulo Freire, author of Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Her work in the UK is now being developed in Latin America through the EmpoderaData projects, working with universities in Colombia and Brazil to develop immersion activities for undergraduates to acquire research and analytical and professional skills in social research careers, whilst studying.
Jackie has won numerous research and teaching grants in her career and focuses on bringing data into the classroom, and on helping students acquire research and professional skills in the workplace.
Acknowledgements
The author would like to thank the following organisations and people.
First, this book could not have been written without the investment in the Q-Step Programme. Three funders contributed to the initiative that enabled the University of Manchesters Q-Step Centre to be set up, and the internship programme to be established: the Nuffield Foundation, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Higher Education Funding Agency for England (HEFCE). The latter is no longer an entity. The University of Manchester contributed to the funding for the internships and enabled us to pay a living-wage to all those who undertook work placements. Together these funding streams enabled this book to be written.
A huge debt of gratitude is owed to all the former students who generously provided their stories for the case studies in this book. They are all named in the Introduction: Alice, Anna, Ella, Julija, Marcus, Mia, Ryan, Sarah, Victoria and Zvi. In addition, I extend my thanks to those who provided the vignettes, short and longer. Without their voices throughout it would be a very different book. They all gave so willingly in order to share their lessons learned with others, and I am tremendously grateful to them for doing so, and happy that they were such a responsive bunch.
Although most host organisations are not named throughout, I want to thank each and every one who has hosted a student intern. They range from small not-for-profits, through to local and national government departments, to data consultancies and polling and market research companies, to media organisations and the World Bank. Without their willingness to take students on work placement experiences this book would be less rich.
Thank you to Jai Seaman and Charlotte Bush at Sage. Their immense encouragement, belief, advice and tremendous support were instrumental in my starting and finishing this book.
A number of colleagues warrant a mention. Steve Jones encouraged me to start the book proposal whilst undertaking my Advance HE Senior Fellowship application. Chris Orme deserves a special thankyou as he believed in me and my vision to develop the internships, and supported me in becoming a chair. Mark Brown, Lisa Williams, Dharmi Kapadia, Marta Cantioch, Patrycja Strycharczuk, Tarani Chandola and Nasira Asghar have been fantastic colleagues helping me with the internship programme. And John MacInnes, Simon Gallacher and Steve Grundy have been champions extraordinaire for developing STEM skills in the social sciences, but also hugely personally supportive of my work. There are many other Q-Step colleagues across the UK who have been wonderful sounding boards and confidence boosters thanks to all of you. I hope this book is useful to you and your students.
