Introduction

B eing open, being connected and being forward-looking these are traits that have served Singapore well. Singapore profits from its openness and proactive diplomacy in seeking connections with the outside world. As we reach our 50th birthday, we not only celebrate the journey Singaporeans have taken together to come this far, but should also honour and celebrate with our friends from around the globe: The countries that have established close diplomatic ties and built enduring partnerships, the companies and corporations that invested in Singapore and stayed despite uncertainties, those that came later and built on the success of Singapore, and the peoples around the world that have contributed in their own way to the development of a dynamic and diverse Singapore.

This book is dedicated to celebrating the rich, diverse, and wide-ranging ties that bind Singapore and Europe: from the official relations established over the years with many European countries, to the corporations and peoples who have come to our shores and become very much part of our economic and social landscapes. These burgeoning ties and connections have made Singaporean society richer in all aspects not just materially, but culturally and in all dimensions.
