ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Ottawa is the only town in Canada that reads a political book from back to front, beginning with the index. Looking for their names, they are annoyed when they find them and furious when they do not.
Thankfully, there remain many people who kindly and generously offered their time and insight to me in the preparation of this book without checking first to see if they would make it into the index. I am grateful to every one of them.
They include (in alphabetical order): Sharon Andrews, Roxanne Benoit, Ray Castelli, Janice Charette, Michael Coates, Steve Coupland, Dave Crapper, Warren Everson, Mike Ferrabee, Bill Fox, Steve Greenaway, Denise Harrington, George Hofsink, Mark Houlton, Ross Howard, Nancy Jamieson, Leslie Jones, John Laschinger, Mario Lavoie, Marjory LeBreton, Benoit Long, Greg Lyle, Laura Lynch, Charles McMillan, Scott Munnoch, John Mykytyshyn, Harry Near, Tim Norris, Rick Perkins, Bill Pristanski, Jim Ramsay, Jean Riou, Noel Sampson, Dan Skaling, David Small, Andy Stark, George Stratton, Paul Terrien, John Tory, Bernard Valcourt, Jodi White, and Skip Willis.
Several people agreed to read either all or parts of the manuscript and offered useful and cogent comments, suggestions, and factual verification. Dr. Charles McMillan was particularly helpful, as was Dr. Donald Savoie, and Benoit Long.
I am particularly grateful to the Rt. Hon. Kim Campbell and the Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney for their kind permission to use many of the photographs contained in this book. Ken Ginn, official photographer to both Brian Mulroney and Kim Campbell, provided copies and advice on those photos he shot that appear in this book. Many thanks. Denis Drever was helpful in providing copies of the photos he took during the 1993 leadership convention and the Charest tortoise tour, some of which now appear in this book.
Several individuals provided me with documents, clippings, speeches, transcripts, and other material from the campaign which provided insight and proved a valuable time-saver as I reviewed the events that make up the book. They include: (in alphabetical order) Justin de Beaucamp, Tom van Dusen, Senator Marjory LeBreton, Maureen Knox, Angela Peart, Rick Perkins, and David Small.
Lucille Raymond took on the last-minute task of editing my changes and formatting the whole manuscript before it went to the publisher. How she read my writing, Ill never know. I am very grateful.
I am also grateful to DBM (Ottawa) Inc. for the use of their computer and office facilities throughout the winter and spring of 1994. Particular thanks to Richard Eaton, Sue Wright, Naomi Howe, and Gerry Stanton.
A special thank you to the people at Dundurn Press, particularly my publisher Kirk Howard, together with Judith Turnbull, Jeanne Macdonald, and Nadine Stoikoff. Thanks also to Shirley Knight Morris for her vigorous eye.
Several people encouraged me from the beginning to pursue what started out as a cathartic exercise and helped convince me that the story needed to be told and I was one who could tell it. Thank you.
In politics, as in many things, one never achieves without mentors. My earliest was now Senator Brenda Robertson; then, a dynamic Cabinet Minister in New Brunswick who convinced me that I had something to contribute. She, and former Premier Richard Hatfield, gave me my political start.
Finally, all my love and affection for my wife Susan and our son, Graham, to whom the book is dedicated. It was they who provided the daily support, encouragement, and incentive to make this book a reality. They believe in me and that makes this all worthwhile.
Not everyone listed above will agree with my interpretation or recounting of the events contained in this book. Those remain my sole responsibility as do any errors or omissions.
