"All politics is local," declared "Tip" O'Neill many years ago. A renowned Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, O'Neill argued that the problems and concerns of towns and cities around the United States affect the actions of their representatives in Washington, D.C., and to some degree determine their future as officeholders.
With the acceleration of globalization in the twenty-first century, might one also declare that "all politics is global?" Do the worries and issues of one local group or community shape those of others far away? Do the policies and actions of one set of government officials in one country have an impact on people in distant places, even if those who have a stake in the decisions have no "remote control"?
