Acknowledgements
This book began as an attempt to update a 1978 work by John Reddaway, the former Director of the Council for the Advancement of ArabBritish Understanding. It quickly became clear that an entirely new book was in the offing. But I am deeply indebted to David Watkins, Mr Reddaway's successor, for granting me permission to utilize large portions of Commentaries on Recurrent Themes of Zionist Propaganda about Palestine and for encouraging me to write this book.
Reading early drafts of other people's writings is a tiresome and taxing chore so I would especially like to thank Professors Zachary Lockman and Walid Khalidi of Harvard University, Donald Wagner, Jim Paul, Tamara Kohn, Khalil Nakhleh and John Mahoney for their comments and criticisms of the various drafts of the manuscript.
I would also like to thank Joseph Schecla, Director (USA) of the International Organization for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and Dr Roselle Tekiner of Eckerd College, Florida, for permission to use portions of her paper, 'Jewish Nationality Status as the Basis for Institutionalized Racism in Israel'; Eric Alterman of the Institute for Independent Social Journalism for permission to use portions of Joy Bonds, et al., Our Roots are Still Alive: the Story of the Palestinian People; Philip Mattar, Associate Editor of the Journal for Palestine Studies for permission to use portions of Uri Davis and Walter Lehn's 'And the Fund Still Lives: the Role of the Jewish National Fund in the Determination of Israel's Land Policies', Journal of Palestine Studies, 28, Summer 1978; Mavis E. Pindard of Faber and Faber Publishers and David Hirst for permission to use scattered paragraphs from his book, The Gun and the Olive Branch: the Roots of Violence in the Middle East; P. A. Barlow of Longman Group Ltd and Henry Cattan for permission to paraphrase portions of Mr Cattan's book, Palestine and International Law; Patricia Walsh and Susan Ziadeh of the Association of ArabAmerican University Graduates and Sheila Ryan for permission to rely on portions of Palestine is, but Not in Jordan.
I would also like to thank David Yates of Americans for Middle East Understanding for invaluable help in researching the maps used; Joe Stork, Editor of MERIP Middle East Report for his assistance in allowing me to search through MERIP's photograph archive; and Nubar Hovsepian for his help with the manuscript. Since I do not read Arabic or Hebrew I would like to thank the person who wishes to remain unnamed for helping in the translation of sources from those languages. Thanks should also go to the helpful librarians at Widener Library at Harvard University. A special thank you goes to Nancy Campbell for her advice and friendship.
