This book arose out of a symposium on the theme A Decade of Dissent: Reflections on Popular Resistance in South Africa, 20002010. The event, which ran from 1214 November 2010, was organised by the editors of this collection and hosted by the South African Research Chair in Social Change (University of Johannesburg).
We would like to thank John Appolis, long-time activist, unionist and former chairperson of the Anti-Privatisation Forum, for a stimulating opening address, which set the tone for the 20 papers that were presented over the course of the symposium.
While the invitation to participate in the subsequent book project was extended to all presenters, not all of them were able to do so owing to other commitments. Nonetheless, their input contributed to the success of the symposium, and we would like to offer a word of thanks to Noor Nieftagodien, Steven Friedman, Steven Robins, Mazibuko Jara, Llewellyn Leonard, Mzi Mngeni, Tayo Jolaosho and Janeske Botes.
We are grateful to the National Research Foundation and the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Johannesburg for financial assistance, without which we would not have been able to put this collection together.
Although this book has given us an opportunity to recognise the critical engagement and intellectual production of our contributing authors, it required a great deal of behind the scenes administrative and technical assistance. In this regard we would like to acknowledge Lucinda Becorny, finance and administration officer at the South African Research in Social Change, and Alex Potter whose proofreading, editing skills and meticulous attention to detail took a large burden off our shoulders.
We would like to thank the team at Pluto Press. Roger van Zwanenberg and David Shulman initially took an interest in the book and David in particular worked closely with us to secure peer reviewers and guiding us through the publication process. Robert Webb oversaw the editorial and production process and Melanie Patrick created the superb cover design. Chase Publishing Services appointed Tracey Dando to copy-edit the manuscript and we are grateful for her sharp eyes and professionalism. We would like to acknowledge the anonymous reviewers whose comments and suggestions helped to clarify and strengthen our arguments. Such work although labour-intensive and time consuming often goes unnoticed and unrewarded and we are tremendously grateful for their intellectual insight and rigour.
Finally we would like to thank those who willingly shared their stories and struggles, which are reflected in these pages. Aluta continua!
