United Nations Global Conferences
United Nations Global Conferences discusses the origins, meaning, purposes, trends and controversies concerning the convening and impacts of United Nations global conferences.
It is a particularly propitious time for such a study since there are thirty such conferences to compare, and many argue that they have not been worth the money expended on them. Others, however, suggest that the only effective way to address global problems, such as racism, sexism, over-population, environmental degradation, overfishing, urbanization, and the proliferation of small arms is through the convening of such conferences. This book, the first comprehensive comparative study of such conferences, provides information essential to the ongoing debate about the pros and cons of multilateralism and includes an examination of:
the typical structure of a conference
substantive and institutional outcomes of the conferences
changes resulting from the conferences
UN conferences as mechanisms for coping with the problems of the twenty-first century.
This book will be essential reading for students of the United Nations and of international organization and global governance, as well as practitioners from non-governmental organizations.
Michael G. Schechter is Professor of International Relations at James Madison College of Michigan State University, USA. He is the author, co-author, editor or co-editor of fifteen books and has published extensively in the fields of international organization and international relations.
Global Institutions Series
Edited by Thomas G. Weiss
The CUNY Graduate Center, New York, USA
and Rorden Wilkinson
University of Manchester, UK
The "Global Institutions Series" is designed to provide readers with comprehensive, accessible, and informative guides to the history, structure, and activities of key international organizations. Every volume stands on its own as a thorough and insightful treatment of a particular topic, but the series as a whole contributes to a coherent and complementary portrait of the phenomenon of global institutions at the dawn of the millennium.
Each book is written by a recognized expert in the field, conforms to a similar structure, and covers a range of themes and debates common to the series. These areas of shared concern include the general purpose and rationale for organizations, developments over time, membership, structure, decision-making procedures, and key functions. Moreover, the current debates are placed in a historical perspective alongside informed analysis and critique. Each book also contains an annotated bibliography and guide to electronic information as well as any annexes appropriate to the subject matter at hand.

Contents
This volume is among the first in a new and dynamic series on "global institutions." As the title suggests, we hope that it offers a comprehensive guide to the history, structure, and concrete activities of "UN global conferences." Remarkable as it may seem, there exist few individual works that offer in-depth treatments of prominent global bodies and processes, much less an entire series of concise and complementary volumes. Those that do exist are either out of date, inaccessible to the non-specialist reader, or seek to develop a specialized understanding of particular aspects of an institution or a process rather than offer an overall account of its functioning. Similarly, existing works have often been written in highly technical language or have been crafted "in-house" and are notoriously self-serving and narrow in focus.
