CHINAS REGIONS IN AN ERA OF GLOBALIZATION
With considerable analytical rigor and clarity in exposition, Summers convincingly shows that Chinas engagement with globalization cannot just be understood at the national level, but has fundamentally been a story about differentiated participation in the global economy across Chinas regions. This is the first book to examine Chinas post-1978 development from a regional perspective. Students, researchers, and policy makers who want to understand Chinas rapid economic rise in the 21st century will find this book indispensable.
Alvin So, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology,
Hong Kong, China
The rise of China has been shaped and driven by its engagement with the global economy during a period of intensified globalization, yet China is a continent-sized economy and society with substantial diversity across its different regions. This means that its engagement with the global economy cannot just be understood at the national level, but requires analysis of the differences in participation in the global economy across Chinas regions.
This book responds to this challenge by looking at the development of Chinas regions in this era of globalization. It traces the evolution of regional policy in China and its implications in a global context. Detailed chapters examine the global trajectory of what is now becoming known as the Greater Bay Area in southern China, the globalization of the inland mega-city of Chongqing, and the role of Chinas regions in the globally-focused belt and road initiative launched by the Chinese government in late 2013.
The book will be of interest to practitioners and scholars engaging with contemporary Chinas political economy and international relations.
Tim Summers works on the political economy and international relations of contemporary China. He is a Lecturer at the Centre for China Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a (non-resident) Senior Consulting Fellow on the Asia Programme at Chatham House. He was British consul-general in Chongqing from 2004 to 2007.

As ever in projects of this scale, lots of people have offered support and inspiration, and I will not attempt to list them all here. In particular, colleagues and mentors past and present at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Chatham House, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as well as students at CUHK over the past decade, have helped me develop my thinking. I am grateful to Andrew Taylor and colleagues at Taylor and Francis for their interest in the project and for their help in seeing the book through to publication. This book was originally commissioned as part of a Chatham House series and I am grateful to Caroline Soper, Amanda Moss, and colleagues at Chatham House for their support. Anonymous reviewers of the original outline and the first draft, as well as Weng Xin, provided insightful comments and suggestions. At home, Lucy and George have been as supportive and inspiring as usual!

Since the 1980s, Chinas rapid economic rise has been accompanied by transformations in the global economy under a new and intensified form of globalization. These two phenomena have been intimately related: the rise of China has been shaped and driven by its incorporation into the global economy, while the nature and structures of globalization have been radically changed as a result of Chinas development.
