A growing interest in Chinese nationalism has emerged as Chinas economy expands and its role on the world stage concomitantly grows larger. To what extent might nationalist feelings in China be shifting in keeping with Chinas new place in the world? What has been the content of Chinese nationalism historically, and how might this affect current-day Chinese perceptions and emotions? To what extent has Chinese nationalism been shaped over the decades by the state? How might we best understand nationalistic currents in China in light of the historical experience of nationalism elsewhere in the world?
Given the salience of these questions, in recent years The China Journal (formerly The Australian Journal of Chinese Affairs) has sought out the most interesting analyses on the nature and ramifications of Chinese nationalism. I am grateful to the nine scholars who have contributed to this effort. Each has conducted extensive research into a different aspect of Chinese nationalism, and each brings their judgments to bear from a different perspective. Most of their papers have been re-edited with their cooperation so as to yet better integrate them into the books common overarching theme. The chapter by Edward Friedman was written expressly to fill an important remaining gap in the volumes coverage, and special appreciation is owed to Ed.
Gary Anson provided expert assistance in copy-editing and proof-reading the chapters, and Ms. Heli Petryk devised the books layout and took responsibility for its production. Without their help the volume would never have appeared.
