We are indebted to a number of people who assisted either in the preparation of the manuscript or in facilitating the workshop on which this volume in based. The organisation of the workshop and the volume were collaborative efforts. We would especially like to thank Dr Zoe Knox at the Contemporary Europe Research Centre (CERC), The University of Melbourne, for her hospitality and tireless efforts to make us welcome during our workshop, and for cheerfully dealing with any problems that arose (some of which were, naturally, at the last minute). Our thanks are also due to the participants from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and postgraduates from The University of Melbourne who attended and provided valuable comments over the course of the workshop.
We would like to thank all participants from the International Relations and Global Security Research Unit at Curtin University of Technology. In addition to the contributors here we appreciate the efforts of Associate Professor Robert Bruce and Ms Victoria Mason for making the trek from Perth to Melbourne and for providing excellent papers and contributing to a friendly and stimulating debate.
