Multiple Democracies in Europe
This book provides an in-depth discussion and analysis of democracy in Europe, with a focus on the new EU member states, and makes an important and original contribution to the debate on the future of European democracy.
Author Paul Blokker seeks to provide a critical reconceptualization of the notion of democratic political culture by developing a multiple democracies theoretical approach. He draws on debates in democratization theory and normative political theory, and presents a cultural-sociological approach for the analysis of democratization and democratic regimes. This approach emphasizes the historical and cultural embedment of democracy, identifies a potential variety of ethics of democracy that underpin democratic political cultures, and points to the significance of democratic imagination in the interpretation and recombination of such ethics.
The book explores the relevance of this approach by analysing multiple political cultures and their role in the emergence of democratic regimes in three new member states Hungary, Poland, and Romania providing a detailed description and analysis of political cultures by means of the analysis of constitutional politics, constitutional texts, political elite discourses, and the identification of distinct politico-cultural elements that distinguish these societies from each other.
It will be of interest to students and scholars of democracy, European studies, post-communist studies, political theory and comparative politics.
Paul Blokker is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Sociology, University of Trento, Italy.

This book is based on a research project on Varieties of Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe that was generously funded by the European Commission by means of an Intra-European Marie Curie Fellowship. The research fellowship was hosted by the Universities of Liverpool and Sussex, under the outstanding guidance of Gerard Delanty. I could further benefit from a post-doctoral fellowship of the Provincia Autonoma di Trento , held at the University of Trento, Italy, for final revisions of the book.
The idea to study democracy and political culture in Central and Eastern Europe in a pluralistic way flowed almost naturally from the insights that I had gained from studying various modernization projects in Romania in the context of my doctoral research at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence. It was also in the later days of this research that I collaborated in a project in the EUI Law Department on The Shadows of the Past over the Constitutionalization of Europe, headed by Christian Joerges, through which I became strongly interested in constitutions, constitutional politics, and varieties of constitutionalism.
This book has been written up in a number of places, most prominently in Liverpool, Brighton, Trento, and Florence, which makes me indebted extensively to the support of people at the University of Liverpool (in particular, Lorraine Campbell), the University of Sussex (in particular, Linda Cooper and Julian Golland), the EUI, and the University of Trento. I would like to express my infinite gratitude to Gerard Delanty, who has read most parts of the manuscript, and provided me with important critical insights and suggestions during the research. I would further like to thank the following people for their helpful comments, suggestions, and creative input in general (particularly those who took the trouble to comment extensively on various chapters): Chris Armbruster, Pter Balsz, Volker Balli, Radu Baltasiu, Cristina Blanco Sio-Lopez, Manuela Boatca, Emanuela Bozzini, Andrea Mubi Brighenti, Robert Brier, Juraj Buzalka, Benoit Challand, Patricia Chiantera-Stutte, Irina Culic, Bruno Dallago, Matthew David, David Dolowitz, Natalie Doyle, John Eade, Bruno Grancelli, Erika Harris, Ulf Hedetoft, Sorin Ioni, Paul Jones, Maarten Keune, Dimitri Kochenov, Zdenk Khn, Alana Lentin, Charlie Masquelier, Elzbieta Matynia, Steven Miles, Peter Milward, Leonardo Morlino, Florian Oberhuber, Antal rkny, William Outhwaite, Dragos Petrecu, Jiri Priban, Marieke Riethof, Julie Ringelheim, Eduardo Romanos, Victor Roudometof, Monica Sassatelli, Marek Skovajsa, Willfried Spohn, Ioan Stanomir, Adina Stefan, Aleksander Surdej, Aleks Szczerbiak, Paul Taggart, Simina-Elena Tnsescu, Laurent Thvenot, David Trfas, and Peter Wagner.
