Acknowledgements
The longer the writing of a book, the more difficult it is for the author to acknowledge properly the help and support of all those who contributed, directly or indirectly, consciously or unconsciously, to its completion. I guess the same goes for the journeys. The longer they last, the more difficult it is for one to remember at once all things, people, feelings encountered. Still, these all make the journey what it is. This, as an apology for those who are not, although they should have been, mentioned here.
I must acknowledge the input and multifaceted support of my colleagues at the London School of Economics (especially in the Department of International Relations and the European Institute) and the University of Sussex, where I have been working while writing this book. Their help and encouragement shaped the thesis put forward in this book in various ways. I am also grateful to the Bodossaki Foundation for funding part of the research on which this book is based.
A number of friends and colleagues offered generously their time and comments on draft chapters. I am grateful to Kimberley Hutchings, Louiza Odysseos, Stefan Elbe, Nicos Mouzelis, Ben OLoughlin, Charlotte Epstein, Mary Martin, Bob Hancke, Claudia Aradau, Ben Rosamond, Stella Ladi, Chris Brown, Michael Dillon, Spyros Economides, Theodoros Couloumbis, Panos Kazakos, Michael Tsinisizelis, Dimitris Chryssochoou, Peter Wilson, Costas Constantinou, Diane Stone, Elias Nikolakopoulos, George Pagoulatos, Dimitris Sotiropoulos, Niamh Hardiman, Jennifer Jackson Preece, Pavlos Hatzopoulos, Nelli Kambouri, Fabio Petito, Andreas Gofas, Colin Wight, Julian Reid, David Howarth, David Stasavage, Nicky Short, Evanthia Milingou, Yannis Stavrakakis, Nicki Smith, Panagiota Manoli, Sotiria Theodoropoulou, Diego Muro, Dermot Hodson, Benedicta Marzinotto, Emma Haddad, Peter Bratsis, Nadia Spiliou, Chryssoula Maurokosta, Rania Kommata, Kostas Manios, Dimitris Sofos, Giorgos Voyiatzis, Marietta Provata, Douglas Bulloch, Jill Stuart, Simon Usherwood, Marco Simoni. Without the long conversations with and guidance of Christopher Hill, and the extensive and thoughtful feedback from Loukas Tsoukalis, Vivien Schmidt, Colin Hay and Kevin Featherstone, this book would not be the same.
I also owe sincere thanks to the people that helped me during my fieldwork in Greece and Ireland. In Greece the help of Nikiforos Diamandouros was more than critical. I am most grateful to him for all his time, encouragement and support. The same goes for Brigid Laffan in Ireland. The time I spent in the Dublin European Institute at University College Dublin proved indeed more productive than what I could have wished for. I am also grateful to Peter Cassells, Garret FitzGerald, Paul Gillespie and Katy Hayward in Ireland, and Dimitris Katsoridas, Pandelis Kapsis, Giorgos Kirtsos, Dimitris Politis, Savvas Robolis and Iason Stratos in Greece, for generously sharing their time and thoughts with me. Many thanks are also due to the political party secretaries in Greece and Ireland for their cooperation and assistance in my search for archival material.
The encouragement and inspiration I draw from my undergraduate and graduate students at the LSE, the University of Essex and the University of Sussex is hard to put in words. To paraphrase and old Irish proverb, if you are lucky enough to have good students, you are lucky enough. They have been the best part in my encounter with the educational process up to now. I thank them from my heart! Special thanks also to Tony Mason, Jenny Howard and the production team at MUP for all their patience, support and encouragement. It has indeed been a pleasure to work with them. Warm thanks also to the MUP anonymous reviewers for all their time, comments and professionalism.
For some debts in life words are not appropriate or enough. Yet I would like to say that without the trust, support, assistance and love of Andreas, Irene, Dimitris, Thodoris, Andy, Aristea and (the newly arrived) Alexios-Andreas nothing of all these would be possible. I dedicate this book to them.
