PREFACE
The articles in this book were written for a conference on the anthropology of Iceland, held in Iowa City, Iowa, in May 1987. Plans for the conference were developed two years earlier when we were both lecturing at the University of Iceland in Reykjavk. We drew up a list of anthropologists who had published on Icelandic issues or had done fieldwork in Iceland. Later, new names were added to the list at the suggestion of those originally contacted. The responses to our invitations were most encouraging. In order to facilitate an atmosphere of detachment, we decided that the conference should take place outside Iceland, assuming that analyses and discussions of results and points of view would somehow be more authentic if carried out away from the reality of the field.
One of the essays in this volume, that of Wieland, was presented in absentia. Another contributor, Rich, was unable to attend. Some of the essays presented at the conference were already committed to publication elsewhere and are not included in the present volume.
