Both the Wall Street Journal and Harvard Business Review have highlighted declining trust as a major contributor to adverse social conditions, both political and economic. Trust in the leaders of organizationswhether large or small, profit or nonprofit, government or privateis increasingly important, perhaps because it seems to be in decline. It is often the missing link in leadership.
This book is for any executive, officer, director, manager, or supervisor who wants to become a better leader. It will help you move those you intend to lead from surface compliance to genuine alignmentinternalization of your vision, mission, and goals.
Let me add that if you do not align with those above you, it will be difficult to persuade them of your noble intentions, or to get them to accept your good ideas or constructive feedback. It may also prove challenging to get subordinates to do what you say, but not what you do.
Leadership is enrolling and enfranchising others, and in a democratic society this only occurs when they trust your competence and character. Inspiring Trust demonstrates how to foster this trust by engaging in specific behaviors that prompt those around yousupervisors, peers, subordinatesto develop confidence in your capability and credibility, to conclude that you (a) know what youre doing and (b) will look out for their welfare and the good of the enterprise.
In the past decade, there has been growing interest in trust. Several books on the topic have already appeared. None of them, however, offers the practical advice captured in the pages that follow. Books about trust typically focus more on the what than the how. They offer discussions about the importance of trust, but mostly high-altitude generalities on how actually to facilitate it. Inspiring Trust, by contrast, offers concrete counsel on what to do to enhance trustand what not to do. You will note, for example, how everything you say, even at a company social event, is on the record. And, you will see why it makes no sense to pay unnecessary social prices.
