Contestants, Profiteers, and the Political Dynamics of Marketization: How Shareholders Gained Control Rights in Britain, Germany, and France: summary, description and annotation

Since the early 1980s, governments worldwide have taken many measures to expand the role of markets. Recent political events reflect widespread disenchantment with neoliberal policies, but it remains doubtful whether populist leaders will deliver the market restraints that many of their voters expect. This book explains the resilience of marketization processes by highlighting the role of profiteers- namely those who, like the organizer of a cock fight, benefit from contests regardless of who wins. By setting up shop on the sidelines, profiteers accumulate resources that boost political efforts to maintain and expand the arena of competition. Evidence comes from the evolution of support for shareholder rights relating to takeover bids among key interest groups and political parties in three countries since the late nineteenth century.

Acknowledgments

This book has been with me for a long time. It was conceived before my first child, who is now about to start school. I am reluctant to let go, because there is so much left to say. But it takes a village, and the scholarly community is better equipped than I alone am to develop the argument further, and to fill the remaining empirical gaps. Some of my colleagues already provided invaluable help before the book went into print. Special thanks are due to the directors of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies, Wolfgang Streeck and Jens Beckert, for encouraging me to try my hand at a large canvas, and for granting the requisite time, space, and funds. I am also indebted to Benjamin Braun, Christoph Deutschmann, Timur Ergen, Arndt Sorge, Christine Trampusch, and Paul Windolf, who took the time to read large portions of the manuscript. Jrgen Beyer, Marius Busemeyer, Thomas Fetzer, Martin Hpner, Paul Lagneau-Ymonet, Renate Mayntz, Aldo Madariaga, and Nicholas Ziegler commented in detail on individual chapters. Sabina Avdagic, Tobias Schulze-Cleven, Anna Schmidt, Michael Schwan, and Matthias Thiemann responded to specific queries in record time. Lucio Baccaro, Pepper Culpepper, Bob Hanck and Christel Schommertz provided publishing advice. Peter Gourevitch, Greg Jackson, Basak Kus, Andreas Nlke, Gunnar Trumbull, and Benjamin Werner commented on previous work that fed into the book. Michael Bauer, Susanne Schmidt, and Kathy Thelen gave general moral support. Kamila Bartosiewicz went far beyond the call of duty to help me balance work and life.

My children, Enda, Oisn, and Yuri, were an immense source of joy, and my parents, Corry and Robert Callaghan, went to incredible lengths to keep us all in the best of spirits. Fergal Treanor brought his heart, mind, and soul to a marriage where laughter abounds and ideas can flourish. This book is dedicated to him.
