The Center is the living memorial of the United States of America to the nations twenty-eighth president, Woodrow Wilson. The U.S. Congress established the Woodrow Wilson Center in 1968 as an international institute for advanced study, symbolizing and strengthening the fruitful relationship between the world of learning and the world of public affairs. The Center opened in 1970 under its own board of trustees, which includes citizens appointed by the president of the United States, federal government officials who serve ex officio, and an additional representative named by the president from within the federal government.
In all its activities the Woodrow Wilson Center is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, supported financially by annual appropriations from the U.S. Congress, and by the contributions of foundations, corporations, and individuals.

This volume has its origins in my long-standing interest in the images the United States and China hold of each other. It equally derives from an interest in the impact that opportunities for field research in China have had on contemporary China studies in the United States. This volume will, it is hoped, contribute to our understanding of both of these issues.
In organizing the conference that led to this volume, and during the lengthy process of producing the book, I have benefited from the intellectual and practical assistance of many individuals. Above all, I would like to express my gratitude to Mary Brown Bullock. As my successor as director of the Asia Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Mary has provided considerable time and assistance in guiding this project to fruition. Without her help the book may not have seen the light of day. Ronald Morse also deserves much credit for helping conceptualize the project initially. Terrill Lautz of the Luce Foundation was also quite helpful in the initial planning stages.
At the conference, several senior sinological scholars contributed their wisdom, although their input is not recorded directly in these pages: A. Doak Bar-nett, Stanley Lubman, Benjamin Schwartz, and Allen S. Whiting. To each I owe an intellectual debt. Also due gratitude are the editorial committee that assisted me in compiling and conceptualizing this volumeAllen Whiting, Steven Goldstein, Harry Harding, and G. William Skinnerand two external readers, Nicholas Lardy and Martin King Whyte, for their critical readings of the manuscript. At the Woodrow Wilson Center Press, particular thanks go to Joe Brinley, who has shepherded the book from inception to publication. Doug Merwin at M.E. Sharpe is also due a debt of thanks for recognizing the significance of this book and taking the project on board. Finally, sincere thanks go to Debra E. Soled, the manuscript copyeditor, whose professional skill considerably improved the product.
