Proceedings of the Second Society for Research
on Child Development Round Table:
Children of Color
The second of three Round Tables brought together scholars from the disciplines of anthropology, education, family and child ecology, pediatrics, nursing, social work, sociology, and developmental psychology, to discuss past, current, and future research, health, and policy issues apropos of children from currently defined minority groups within American society.
Regardless of the time or the conditions under which various peoples came to North America, their presence has contributed to the rich diversity of cultures that now define American society and that link its citizenry to nearly every geographical region of the world. The only guarantee about the next century is that this diversity will continue to increase. The Immigration Act of 1990 paved the way for substantially more immigration to the United States than in the preceding decade, and, by the time the 1990s draw to a close, immigration will have accounted for more than half of the population growth of the United States during the decade. This immigration in combination with growth rates among minorities within the United States, forecasts an American population in the mid 21st century that will be slightly more than SO percent non-white. However, knowledge about the diversity of cultures is not matched by an equal knowledge about the diversity of child development within those cultures. Neither is there a critical mass of researchers with sufficient cultural competence to address the methodological, theoretical, and pragmatic challenges that within-culture studies present. The Round Table was designed to frame these challenges and to focus attention on the need to develop innovative approaches to the study of child development that can strengthen our understanding of within-species diversity.
In ) respond to the challenge for innovations in theory and propose a phenomenological ecological systems theory for the study of risk, vulnerability, and resilience of urban youth who reside in high risk environments. In addition, they call for the construction of a normative developmental psychology of minority youth.
Such a normative psychology will require a broader understanding of culture, and John Ogbus anthropological approach serves as a solid starting point (, Norma Olvera Ezzell and her colleagues report some of the findings from their study of this community based program. They found that mothers who had fatalistic views about health were less likely to use socialization techniques that would promote the internalization of good health practices among their children.
