The materials included in this bibliography are derived from English-and Chinese-language sources (which predominate), as well as from Japanese, French, German, and Italian publications. The majority of references are available in English-language publications or translations. Those sources which are solely in the Chinese language are listed in romanized form with a concurrent English title. References are made to a variety of bibliographies, biographical dictionaries, yearbooks, dictionaries of terminology, and similar standard works. These have been published during or after the Cultural Revolution and do not include pre-1966 publications.
For the readers convenience this bibliography is divided into fourteen sections, I through XIV, under functional headings such as Elementary (Primary) Education, Secondary (Middle) Education, Higher Education, etc. Within each major section, references are arranged alphabetically by authors, though, in the case (especially for primary sources) where authorship is not otherwise identified, materials are entered under publication source. Cross references are provided for almost half of the items which could be classified under more than one heading. Accordingly, for the complete annotation the reader should consult the appropriate section as indicated at the end of each cross reference, i.e., [II] stands for section n of the bibliography.
Major English-language sources on education noted in this bibliography are available from the following four geographical research areas (): Hong Kong, B.C.C.; Taiwan; the United States; and the Peoples Republic of China.
From Hong Kong (B. C. C.)
In the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong, an extensive range of material on Chinese Communist education has been compiled in both Chinese-and English-language editions. These compilations are based on a variety of Chinese Communist newspapers and periodicals. Two major organizations are engaged in compiling and translating these materials: the American Consulate General in Hong Kong and the Union Research Institute (URI).
In 1950, a press and translation unit was established in the United States Consulate General in Hong Kong to develop a regular flow of materials on China (PRC). The principal English-language translation series of the Consulate are compiled as follows:
1. Current Background , published since June 1950 on an ad hoc basis, usually weekly. Each issue generally focuses on a single aspect of Chinese Communism and is a compilation from various newspaper and periodical articles.
Major economic and political conferences are thoroughly documented in the translation, and a chronology of principal developments is presented periodically.
2. Survey of China Mainland Press , published since November 1950. It is the major serial of the translation services issued by the Consulate and covers a carefully selected range of activities in China (PRC). The Survey regularly carries the main governmental press releases of the New China News Agency and of the influential Jen-min jih-pao [Peoples Daily].
3. Extracts from China Mainland Magazines , published since August 1955 on an ad hoc basis, sometimes weekly. Translations are made in full of periodical articles from various journals such as Jen-min chiao-yu [PeopleTs Education], Hsueh-hsi [Study], and Chiao-wu pao [Overseas Chinese Affairs Journal]. In 1962, Extracts became Selections from China Mainland Magazines .
4. Review of the Hong Kong Chinese Press , published from 1950 to 1961. It was issued daily and contained rsums of both the pro-Nationalist and pro-Communist press.
Since 1956, Current Background, Survey of China Mainland Press , and Extracts from China Mainland Magazines have been regularly indexed. The cumulative issues of Current Background and Survey of China Mainland Press from 1950 to 1955 have recently been indexed as well.
5. Current Scene, Developments in Mainland China (USIS) consists of a monthly series of well-documented monographs on various aspects of Chinese political, economic, and educational developments; it began appearing in 1962.
6. China Reporting Service (USIS) provided features and graphics on China; it merged with Current Scene on July 24, 1970.
Since February 1971, the first three publications (items 1-3) have been available from Clearinghouse, U.S. Department of Commerce, Springfield, Virginia, U.S.A., on a subscription basis.
The Union Research Institute (URI) in Hong Kong also engages in translating and compiling English-language studies on various aspects of Chinese Communism. The URI was first established in Nanking in 1948 and reestablished in Hong Kong in January 1951 as a division of the Union Press. The Institute has accumulated a vast collection of materials concerning China (PRC), mostly publications by the Chinese Communists. The materials, covering the entire period since the establishment of the Communist government, have been minutely classified, microfilmed, and indexed.
