We are longtime friends and have worked together on various books and research projects. Additionally, we have a deep interest in sustainable investing and view it as a wave of the future. Given the dynamic pace of sustainable investing, its unsurprising that various books examine different facets of sustainability, ranging from textbooks to specialized topics such as investing in renewable energy and affordable housing. These books also focus on different audiences like institutional and other professional investors, individual investors, companies, and academics.
Given both the breadth and depth of this sprawling field, this relatively short book is not all-encompassing. Trying to cover everything for all potential audiences is unrealistic. Therefore, our book focuses on helping individual investors understand sustainable investings leading issues and how they can become sustainable investors. Although some other books target individual investors, we believe a gap exists in treating the subject and covering underlying topics. Thus, we use a question-and-answer (Q&A) format to examine some of sustainable investings most critical questions in a concise and user-friendly manner. The design enables you to browse for topics of interest if you choose not to read the book from cover to cover. Furthermore, each chapter contains insightful and amusing quotes, highlighted in boxes that create interest and relate to specific questions. These quotes come from noted investment professionals and others.
Sustainable Investing: What Everyone Needs to Know tries to demystify sustainable investing for individual investors who might be interested in adding such investments to their portfolios. It attempts to identify what everyone needs to know about sustainable investing and what they want to know about this fascinating subject. The book also offers a balanced explanation of the broad issues associated with sustainable investing concisely but authoritatively. However, youll need to determine whether the book accomplishes its goals.
John Maxwell, an American clergyman, once said, Teamwork makes the dream work. This statement applies to the writing and publishing of this book. With three authors, the sum is greater than the parts because each author makes unique contributions to achieve a common goal. Hence, the book is a team effort in which the team accomplishes more than anyone could achieve independently. However, much more goes into publishing a book.
Although many people played an essential role in this process, we want to single out a few. First, we thank the anonymous reviewers of our book proposal for their helpful comments about the most relevant topics to include in the book. Second, we greatly appreciate the highly professional work done by all our partners at Oxford University Press. In particular, we recognize the contributions of James Cook (Editor) and Macey Fairchild (Assistant Editor), who helped to move the book through the process. Additionally, Kopu Koperundevi (Project Manager) from Newgen Knowledge Works did an excellent job guiding the book through the production process. Third, we appreciate the support provided by our respective institutions: the Kogod School of Business at American University, Rollins College of Business at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and College of Business and Public Policy, University of Alaska, Anchorage. Finally, we thank our families and dedicate this book to them: Linda and Rory Baker, Anna Nofsinger, and Mikael Holzhauer.
