B RINGING THIS PROJECT TO FRUITION required two things: One, selection. Two, selling. By selection, I mean identifying those individuals I believed would best fit into this book. By selling, I mean convincing them about the viability and value of this project, as without the participation of such a quality cast, it would not have been possible. I recognize this and would like to thank everyone who helped to make this possible.
I sincerely appreciate: Albert M. Calland III coming out of the shadows, so to speak, and agreeing to give us his views on leadership. Berts story is the stuff of legend, and, to the best of my knowledge, this is the first time that he has agreed to put this to print. Bert is a national hero in the War on Terror, and our nation is indebted to him for his service and his sacrifice.
Steven Mays, whose assistance in this project has been of incalculable value. Steve has been with me through this entire journey and has been an outstanding resource on many fronts. Steve unhesitatingly took on many functions, such as reading drafts, providing input on concepts and ideas, helping to design covers, unfailingly conveying his keen insight, and offering advice. He never hesitated to take that contrary position which is so necessary to the improvement and success of any project. He was also emphatic about having less sizzle, more steak. Thank you, Steve!
John Ballard, for being meticulous and demonstrating a knack for picking up on the things that go unnoticed by others. John was instrumental in helping to pick out the title and subtitle and, along the way, made some valuable observations and recommendations which undoubtedly improved the quality of the book.
John Boomer Stufflebeem, for coming onboard and always being there when a question was asked or a sounding board needed. I recall his email, which is classic Boomerconcise, to the point, and difficult to misunderstandwhen approached about the project. He simply responded Im in. Hooyah, Boomer. Boomer was an outstanding resource in referring some of the individuals in this book; he provided guidance and counsel throughout this process.
Jacob Kashiwagi, for your keen insight, analysis, and boundless enthusiasm. You were a constant presence throughout and never hesitated to provide input and make suggestions, to the betterment of this project. You are a pioneer in youth development, and those young folks are better for having you mentor them.
Torie Clarke, for buying into this project and making it work, regardless of what city or continent you were on. I enjoyed reading and discussing your stories, insight and perspectives on leadership, and advice on communication, especially during a crisis. I admire your understated manner and humility, considering all that you have accomplished, and appreciate you always exhibiting a creative and can-do demeanor.
Mordecai Brownlee, for taking that leap of faith to join this project and pointing out that five stars always beats one star. Your passion for taking care of the people certainly comes through in your chapter. I wish you continued success in your new position.
Michael Miller, for coming onboard, exhibiting patience and understanding, and offering your perspectives on leadership. You are a student of leadership and well versed in many ideas and theories concerning the topic. I appreciate you sharing those with me, as I gained additional insight and perspective by collaborating with you.
Thomasina Skipper, for sharing your heartfelt journey, which is remarkable and could be a book unto itself. Your story will be a source of inspiration and motivation to many. You provide some great advice that is worth taking to heart.
Chris Molina, for your staunch belief and support in all things concerning leadership and for understanding that, if you never ask, you never know. You are passionate about the topic of leadership and will also always be one other thing: Once a Marine, always a Marine. Semper Fi!
Daralee Barbera, for your contribution, insight on leadership, and sharing your views with us. The readers will benefit from your lessons learned, as you pioneered the way on numerous fronts. And, by the waycongratulations on recently attaining your Ed.D.
Jon Rennie, for your ardent support and excitement about this project and all things leadership. I have enjoyed how you have shown that leadership practices in a submarine work in real life, although it is a much different environment, where there are only two types of ships, according to Jonsubmarines and targets.
Carl Sharperson, for coming onboard, sharing your story with us, and exhibiting class and humility in all aspects of your life as you always take care of those around you. I have a great title for your sequel: Razor Sharp Leadership.
Jackie Freedman, for taking that leap of faith, exhibiting enthusiasm with this project, and sharing your story. You have a knack for that attention to detail, all the while maintaining the broader perspective. You must get to Delicious Orchards.
Alan Lerchbacker, for not only agreeing to be in the book but working with me to set up the leadership classes with the University of San Diego. With your high-octane approach to life and a mindset that understands that all things are possible, you were an absolute pleasure to work with.
The students of the leadership class at the University of San Diego. I enjoyed talking with you, answering questions, and reading your responses. I wish each one of you all the best as you embark on your journey, hopefully avoiding anyone who exhibits Dark Triad personality traits.

W HAT DEFINES GOOD LEADERSHIP , and how can we become great leaders? That is the essence of any leadership journey. As you embark on your leadership quest and seek answers, I want to help you in discovering something, which may or may not be apparent, but which I hope will be by the time you are done reading this book. We dont become great leaders by accident. We learn to be great leadersoften by the example of others. If leadership interests you and you are committed to learning best practices and principles, continue reading.
When I sat down to create The Experience of Leadership, I knew I wanted to put something together that would be different from other leadership booksa book that goes beyond inspiration and insights to offer the reader clear guidance on how to best develop their own leadership skills. Just as important, I wanted to show readers how they can continue to improve their skills, as we are always learning and growing. The what was there, but the how was something I wrestled with, as I wanted to accomplish three things with this book:
