INTRODUCTION
W illiam Jefferson Clinton was president of the United States from 1993 to 2001. He was well regarded and had his fair share of controversy during the time he was president. However, not a lot of people have looked at his life overall to see what has added up to create the person who some believe to be one of the most beloved people in American History. While there are many bits of information on Bill Clinton that will be set forth here, it seems that people like to focus only on a couple of things about each president instead of remembering what it was like before and during the time they were in office.
Throughout his years as President Bill Clinton, he had done quite a bit for the United States of America that not many people have thought about or were even aware of. This is due to the fact that his time as president was shrouded in controversy over a few different issues. This has clouded the fact that he had many accomplishments while he was in office and did a lot for the country.
It should be noted that facts presented here about President Clinton are all from reliable sources. Quotes may have been paraphrased to fit within the context of some of the chapters following this introduction, but they can all be found easily by looking for quotes by Bill Clinton. The research is sound, but there will be times when the reader may notice certain items presented aren't exactly what have been said. If this happens, then it will be noted to do a little extra research on the matter.
So many presidents have promised to make changes and, unlike them, Bill Clinton took a lot of action on what he was promising to others at the time. He took the country and pushed it further than it had been in recent memory. The media and others tended to ignore the fact that he was working hard to make life a little easier for everyone, which is a shame for the most part. Sure, the controversy and some of the things said were great for television, but they hardly represent who Bill Clinton really was behind the scenes.
There will always be many half-truths and things of that nature about anyone who has been in the spotlight. Without hearing exactly what was said within the walls of the White House, it's impossible to determine what exactly went on. That's not to say that the history of the 42nd president hasn't been recorded, but it does pay to do some reading up on each fact to get a true idea of when what was said and where.
When all is said and done, it takes quite a bit of support from the people to become the most well known person in America, who basically is Commander in Chief and holds the highest office possible. Without these leaders, the country would fall apart and nothing would get done. The chaos that would occur without a strong leader such as we've had in each of the past presidents would certainly not be healthy for such a young country. While there are mistakes that are made by every human being and thus every president, perhaps looking at these people in a different light will be helpful in determining who they really were.
EARLY LIFE
B ill Clinton's name when he was born on the 19th of August 1946 was William Jefferson Blythe III. He was born in Hope, Arkansas at the Julia Chester Hospital to a father who sold items while traveling. Just a few short months before Bill Clinton was born, his father was killed in a vehicle wreck.
When Bill was growing up his mother basically took care of him for a short period of time but then went to New Orleans to live, as she wanted to be a nurse through schooling that was offered there. This meant Bill had to stay in Hope where his grandparents took care of him. They owned a store where they sold the public groceries.
At this time, racial segregation was still happening. The remarkable thing about his grandparents, however, is that they would sell to anyone, no matter what their race was. In the 1950's, Bill's mother came back and married a man who had ownership of an automobile dealership. This family unit then moved to Hot Springs with his mom's new husband and her brother.
When Bill lived in Hot Springs, he started attending a Catholic school by the name of St. John's. He then went to Ramble Elementary, and finally the high school in Hot Springs. Bill Clinton took his stepfather's last name but only around the age of fifteen when he seriously took the surname to heart. He didn't have pleasant memories of his stepfather, saying he drank and abused his mother quite a bit. The stepfather was known to abuse Bill's half brother as well. So they were better protected, Bill would step between the stepfather and who he was abusing, threatening to turn violent if things didn't calm down.
Bill is very honest about his upbringing, as he's written about it in his autobiography, My Life. This is a great glimpse at his life as he saw it through his own eyes. It's a wonderful biography in that it details each memory the former president had growing up that led him to be who he is now. It's a little bit tough to read in some places as the brutal honesty about a rough upbringing comes to light. Those who believe he came from the best family unit possible and was without struggles are wrong, according to what he remembers and enlightens us with in his autobiography.
Early on, Bill was aware that he wasn't going to be famous for something such as music or his riches. His story is basically a story about the struggles he endured, and then learning how to get through various situations with intelligence and a gift for helping people that are in tight spots. As his actions were already showing, he wasn't afraid to put up a fight if it was for something he believed in. There were a lot of injustices he had to face on a daily basis, which is probably why he became who he is today.
It goes without saying that many of these earlier experiences started to shape a man who wanted to stand for doing the right thing. There also were times when it seemed as if he wasn't going to make it as a person who did well due to the setbacks he experienced. However, in many cases, anyone that does something great is not without a little bit of trouble in their past. It's a good thing that Bill was taught by his grandparents to love anyone regardless of who they are and that he for the most part wouldn't let his stepfather get to him or his family if he had anything to do with it.
HIGH SCHOOL
D uring the time Bill attended high school, he explored being a musician and other avenues. Even though he loved to play the tenor saxophone, it was then that he decided that he couldn't be just like every other musician or someone that could make a living off of being super famous like great jazz musicians. He did well enough to win the first chair within the sax section in the state, but that's about as far as it went.
While he went to Hot Springs High School it was a segregated and all white school, which was part of the norm back then, so it didn't really stand out to anyone. At this public school, Clinton was able to do well as the Principal Johnnie Mae Mackie was a woman that he looked up to. He was basically a bright student, and the principal saw this in him and tried to bring out his good side.
