The idea of studying threat politicswhy some threat images but not others take on salience in politics and societal debateoriginated in 1998 in conversations between Erik Noreen, Gunnar Sjstedt and myself. We found that our individual research projects at the time had several common denominators. In October 1999, we jointly organised a conference on threat images and security policy, held at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs, Stockholm. Out of this the idea of producing a book on threat politics emerged.
